There are many types of computer attacks including viruses, worms, Trojan horses, adware, spyware, and malware. Thankfully, antivirus software can prevent attacks through multiple tactics. Antivirus software may search for known virus patterns, for known malicious codes, or for slight variations of viruses or malicious codes. Another tactic employed is running new files through a sandbox: a test the computer implements to see if the file is malicious.
The Importance
Viruses can open a computer up to attacks intended to kill the computer, leave the computer open to a personal attack, or open all of the information in your computer to a criminal intending to steal your money or identity. Because of this antivirus software becomes especially important for all computer users. When the software finds a virus or malicious file, the file is rejected, protecting the computer from harm and user information from criminal hands.
The Negatives
Although antivirus software often protects users from viruses, the software can slow the computer down. Also, if unfamiliar with antivirus software, a user may not know how to respond to some of the antivirus questions, and a wrong choice could allow a virus access to the computer. In addition, an inexperienced user may have trouble determining between false positives and false negatives, creating an undesirable heuristic determination that can leave the computer open for attack.
Even given the difficulties presented to new users, antivirus software can prevent viruses from gaining access to the computer. New users should be careful about responding to questions presented by the antivirus software. When in doubt, the inexperienced user should instead request the assistance of a computer professional in ensuring the computer remains safe from attack.
Antivirus software may have some limitations, but if new users are careful and ask questions, the software can save the computer and the user from an attack.
